2026-07-25tools/build: selftests: Remove some duplicate toolchain definitionsJames Clark1-4/+0
Try to remove some, but not all duplicate toolchain definitions. In these instances, their makefiles already include tools/scripts/Makefile.include which defines these in a consistent way. STRIP is the only one that was set with an '=', but I don't think it was significant so that difference can be dropped. 2026-06-04tools subcmd: Robust fallback and existence checks for process reapingIan Rogers1-4/+65
Update check_if_command_finished() and wait_or_whine() to handle invalid PIDs gracefully (<= 0) by setting cmd->finished = 1 and returning early. This avoids executing waitpid(-1, ...) or waitpid(0, ...) downstream, which can block or reap parallel tests' exit status causing state corruption. Introduce a fallback mechanism in check_if_command_finished() using waitpid(..., WNOHANG) when /proc/<pid>/status is inaccessible (e.g. due to EMFILE/ENFILE) to safely check and reap finished children. 2026-05-28tools subcmd: allow parsing distinct --opt and --no-optTomas Glozar2-4/+9
libsubcmd automatically generates for every option --opt an equivalent negated option, --no-opt, to unset the option. Vice versa, for every option declared as --no-opt, a shorthand --opt is declared for convenience. Add a flag, PARSE_OPT_NOAUTONEG, to disable this behavior. This new flag behaves similarly to the already existing PARSE_OPT_NONEG, only it does not reject the --no-opt variant, but leaves it undefined. That is useful when there is a conflicting distinct --no-opt option in the syntax of the tool. PARSE_OPT_NOAUTONEG is enabled per-option, allowing to unset other options that do not have this conflict. 2026-05-28tools subcmd: support optarg as separate argumentTomas Glozar2-8/+46
In addition to "-ovalue" and "--opt=value" syntax, allow also "-o value" and "--opt value" for options with optional argument when the newly added PARSE_OPT_OPTARG_ALLOW_NEXT flag is set. This behavior is turned off by default since it does not make sense for tools using non-option command line arguments. Consider the ambiguity of "cmd -d x", where "-d x" can mean either "-d with argument of x" or "-d without argument, followed by non-option argument x". This is not an issue in the case that the tool takes no non-option arguments. To implement this, a new local variable, force_defval, is created in get_value(), along with a comment explaining the logic. 2026-01-13libsubcmd: Fix null intersection case in exclude_cmds()Sri Jayaramappa1-4/+6
When there is no exclusion occurring from the cmds list - for example - cmds contains ["read-vdso32"] and excludes contains ["archive"] - the main loop completes with ci == cj == 0. In the original code the loop processing the remaining elements in the list was conditional: if (ci != cj) { ...} So we end up in the assertion loop since ci < cmds->cnt and we incorrectly try to assert the list elements to be NULL and fail with the following error help.c:104: exclude_cmds: Assertion `cmds->names[ci] == NULL' failed. Fix this by moving the if (ci != cj) check inside of a broader loop. If ci != cj, left shift the list elements, as before, and then unconditionally advance the ci and cj indicies which also covers the ci == cj case. 2025-09-12perf subcmd: avoid crash in exclude_cmds when excludes is emptyhupu1-0/+3
When cross-compiling the perf tool for ARM64, `perf help` may crash with the following assertion failure: help.c:122: exclude_cmds: Assertion `cmds->names[ci] == NULL' failed. This happens when the perf binary is not named exactly "perf" or when multiple "perf-*" binaries exist in the same directory. In such cases, the `excludes` command list can be empty, which leads to the final assertion in exclude_cmds() being triggered. Add a simple guard at the beginning of exclude_cmds() to return early if excludes->cnt is zero, preventing the crash. 2025-07-02perf tools: Fix use-after-free in help_unknown_cmd()Namhyung Kim1-5/+7
Currently perf aborts when it finds an invalid command. I guess it depends on the environment as I have some custom commands in the path. $ perf bad-command perf: 'bad-command' is not a perf-command. See 'perf --help'. Aborted (core dumped) It's because the exclude_cmds() in libsubcmd has a use-after-free when it removes some entries. After copying one to another entry, it keeps the pointer in the both position. And the next copy operation will free the later one but it's the same entry in the previous one. For example, let's say cmds = { A, B, C, D, E } and excludes = { B, E }. ci cj ei cmds-name excludes -----------+-------------------- 0 0 0 | A B : cmp < 0, ci == cj 1 1 0 | B B : cmp == 0 2 1 1 | C E : cmp < 0, ci != cj At this point, it frees cmds->names[1] and cmds->names[1] is assigned to cmds->names[2]. 3 2 1 | D E : cmp < 0, ci != cj Now it frees cmds->names[2] but it's the same as cmds->names[1]. So accessing cmds->names[1] will be invalid. This makes the subcmd tests succeed. $ perf test subcmd 69: libsubcmd help tests : 69.1: Load subcmd names : Ok 69.2: Uniquify subcmd names : Ok 69.3: Exclude duplicate subcmd names : Ok Fixes: 4b96679170c6 ("libsubcmd: Avoid SEGV/use-after-free when commands aren't excluded") Reviewed-by: Ian Rogers <irogers@google.com> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20250701201027.1171561-3-namhyung@kernel.org Signed-off-by: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org>

2024-11-13libsubcmd: Move va_end() before exitLuo Yifan1-1/+1
This patch makes a minor adjustment by moving the va_end call before exit. 2024-09-11tools: Drop nonsensical -O6Sam James1-3/+1
-O6 is very much not-a-thing. Really, this should've been dropped entirely in 49b3cd306e60b9d8 ("tools: Set the maximum optimization level according to the compiler being used") instead of just passing it for not-Clang. Just collapse it down to -O3, instead of "-O6 unless Clang, in which case -O3". GCC interprets > -O3 as -O3. It doesn't even interpret > -O3 as -Ofast, which is a good thing, given -Ofast has specific (non-)requirements for code built using it. So, this does nothing except look a bit daft. Currently, commands which depend on 'parse_options_subcommand()' don't show the usage string, and instead show '(null)' $ ./perf sched Usage: (null) -D, --dump-raw-trace dump raw trace in ASCII -f, --force don't complain, do it -i, --input <file> input file name -v, --verbose be more verbose (show symbol address, etc) 'parse_options_subcommand()' is generally expected to initialise the usage string, with information in the passed 'subcommands[]' array This behaviour was changed in: 230a7a71f92212e7 ("libsubcmd: Fix parse-options memory leak") Where the generated usage string is deallocated, and usage[0] string is reassigned as NULL. As discussed in [1], free the allocated usage string in the main function itself, and don't reset usage string to NULL in parse_options_subcommand With this change, the behaviour is restored. $ ./perf sched Usage: perf sched [<options>] {record|latency|map|replay|script|timehist} -D, --dump-raw-trace dump raw trace in ASCII -f, --force don't complain, do it -i, --input <file> input file name -v, --verbose be more verbose (show symbol address, etc) [1]: https://lore.kernel.org/linux-perf-users/htq5vhx6piet4nuq2mmhk7fs2bhfykv52dbppwxmo3s7du2odf@styd27tioc6e/ Fixes: 230a7a71f92212e7 ("libsubcmd: Fix parse-options memory leak") Suggested-by: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Aditya Gupta <adityag@linux.ibm.com> Acked-by: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org> Tested-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com> Cc: Athira Rajeev <atrajeev@linux.vnet.ibm.com> Cc: Disha Goel <disgoel@linux.vnet.ibm.com> Cc: Ian Rogers <irogers@google.com> Cc: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@kernel.org> Cc: Kajol Jain <kjain@linux.ibm.com> Cc: Madhavan Srinivasan <maddy@linux.ibm.com> Cc: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20240904061836.55873-2-adityag@linux.ibm.com Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>
2024-08-05tools build: Correct libsubcmd fixdep dependenciesBrian Norris1-1/+1
All built targets need fixdep to be built first, before handling object dependencies [1]. We're missing one such dependency before the libsubcmd target. This resolves .cmd file generation issues such that the following sequence produces many fewer results: $ git clean -xfd tools/ $ make tools/objtool $ grep "cannot find fixdep" $(find tools/objtool -name '*.cmd') In particular, only a buggy tools/objtool/libsubcmd/.fixdep.o.cmd remains, due to circular dependencies of fixdep on itself. Such incomplete .cmd files don't usually cause a direct problem, since they're designed to fail "open", but they can cause some subtle problems that would otherwise be handled by proper fixdep'd dependency files. [2] [1] This problem is better described in commit abb26210a395 ("perf tools: Force fixdep compilation at the start of the build"). I don't apply its solution here, because additional recursive make can be a bit of overkill. [2] Example failure case: cp -arl linux-src linux-src2 cd linux-src2 make O=/path/to/out cd ../linux-src rm -rf ../linux-src2 make O=/path/to/out Previously, we'd see errors like: make[6]: *** No rule to make target '/path/to/linux-src2/tools/include/linux/compiler.h', needed by '/path/to/out/tools/bpf/resolve_btfids/libsubcmd/exec-cmd.o'. Stop. Now, the properly-fixdep'd .cmd files will ignore a missing /path/to/linux-src2/... git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/perf/perf-tools-next Pull perf tools updates from Namhyung Kim: "Internal cleanup: - Refactor PMU data management to handle hybrid systems in a generic way. Do more work in the lexer so that legacy event types parse more easily. A side-effect of this is that if a PMU is specified, scanning sysfs is avoided improving start-up time. - Fix hybrid metrics, for example, the TopdownL1 works for both performance and efficiency cores on Intel machines. To support this, sort and regroup events after parsing. - Add reference count checking for the 'thread' data structure. - Lots of fixes for memory leaks in various places thanks to the ASAN and Ian's refcount checker. - Reduce the binary size by replacing static variables with local or dynamically allocated memory. - Introduce shared_mutex for annotate data to reduce memory footprint. - Make filesystem access library functions more thread safe. Test: - Organize cpu_map tests into a single suite. - Add metric value validation test to check if the values are within correct value ranges. - Add perf stat stdio output test to check if event and metric names match. - Add perf data converter JSON output test. - Fix a lot of issues reported by shellcheck(1). This is a preparation to enable shellcheck by default. - Make the large x86 new instructions test optional at build time using EXTRA_TESTS=1. - Add a test for libpfm4 events. perf script: - Add 'dsoff' outpuf field to display offset from the DSO. $ perf script -F comm,pid,event,ip,dsoff ls 2695501 cycles: 152cc73ef4b5 (/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/ld-2.31.so+0x1c4b5) ls 2695501 cycles: ffffffff99045b3e ([kernel.kallsyms]) ls 2695501 cycles: ffffffff9968e107 ([kernel.kallsyms]) ls 2695501 cycles: ffffffffc1f54afb ([kernel.kallsyms]) ls 2695501 cycles: ffffffff9968382f ([kernel.kallsyms]) ls 2695501 cycles: ffffffff99e00094 ([kernel.kallsyms]) ls 2695501 cycles: 152cc718a8d0 (/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libselinux.so.1+0x68d0) ls 2695501 cycles: ffffffff992a6db0 ([kernel.kallsyms]) - Adjust width for large PID/TID values. perf report: - Robustify reading addr2line output for srcline by checking sentinel output before the actual data and by using timeout of 1 second. - Allow config terms (like 'name=ABC') with breakpoint events. $ perf record -e mem:0x55feb98dd169:x/name=breakpoint/ -p 19646 -- sleep 1 perf annotate: - Handle x86 instruction suffix like 'l' in 'movl' generally. - Parse instruction operands properly even with a whitespace.
