Omar reports that CONFIG_X86_NATIVE_CPU=y allows builds to opportunistically
emit instructions using %r16-%r31 (EGPRs) when the build host supports APX
since the commit:
ea1dcca1de12 ("x86/kbuild/64: Add the CONFIG_X86_NATIVE_CPU option to locally optimize the kernel with '-march=native'")
But the kernel is not yet prepared to use new registers internally. For
example, there is no context-switch support for general in-kernel use.
Explicitly disable EGPR use when building with -march=native.
For C, since GCC 14 and Clang 18, both compilers support suppressing EGPR
use with -mno-apx-features=egpr, whose availability can be detected via
cc-option.
For Rust, pass features=-apxf through the generated JSON to avoid
unstable-feature warnings, see
https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/139284
Note Rust only accepts the option to disable APX instructions entirely or not.
Support for this gating also depends on the Rust/LLVM combination. Rust
1.88 introduced the `apxf` feature option, but versions prior to 1.93 may
emit an `apxf` attribute to the backend that only LLVM 23 or later can
interpret. Restrict native Rust builds accordingly.

Commit b18b047002b7 ("kbuild: change scripts/mksysmap into sed script")
converted scripts/mksysmap from a shell script to a sed script.
However an error was made - escaping of '$' required \\ escaping in shell
but only \ in a sed script.
This was mostly corrected in commit 7a6c355b55c0 ("scripts/mksysmap: Fix
escape chars '$'"), but this fix missed arm64 PIE namespace local symbols
like __pi_$x and __pi_$d which appear in System.map and /proc/kallsyms:
$ grep __pi_\\$ /proc/kallsyms | sort -u
0000000000000000 d __pi_$d
0000000000000000 t __pi_$x
Fix the escaping properly.

Commit 3e86e4d74c04 ("kbuild: keep .modinfo section in vmlinux.unstripped")
keeps .modinfo symbols out of System.map and kallsyms, which assumes unique
IDs have a format like '__UNIQUE_ID_modinfo123'.
However, commit afb026b6d35c ("compiler: Tweak __UNIQUE_ID() naming"), sent
in the same cycle, changes this to '__UNIQUE_ID_modinfo_123'.
As a result this regexp has never matched and every kernel since v6.18 has
carried one kallsyms entries for every MODULE_INFO() declaration in the
kernel whether the modules are compiled or not.
That's 5,810 entries for an x86 defconfig build and 15,200 for arm64.
On x86 defconfig that is 113 KiB of kallsyms tables and 32 KiB of bzImage,
and every lookup walks past them.
Fix the pattern.

When building in a kernel tree prior to commit b055f4c431e3 ("sorttable:
Move ELF parsing into scripts/elf-parse.[ch]") with clang-23 or newer,
which implements a new warning under -Wunused-but-set-variable for
static global variable, there is a warning from sorttable because
long_size is unused when MCOUNT_SORT_ENABLED is not set:
scripts/sorttable.c:452:12: error: variable 'long_size' set but not used [-Werror,-Wunused-but-set-global]
452 | static int long_size;
| ^
Mark long_size as __maybe_unused to avoid inserting more ugly #ifdef
directives while insuring the warning does not reappear, as the
aforementioned change does not alter the uses of long_size, so it
appears to be coincidence that the warning disappears after this
refactoring.

Commit 2d69b891e646 ("kbuild: Support generated asm-headers in
subdirectories") switched the stale-wrapper sweep in
scripts/Makefile.asm-headers from $(wildcard $(obj)/*.h) to a find(1)
invocation, so that generated headers in subdirectories are considered.
The two do not match the same set of files. Make's $(wildcard) uses glob
semantics, where a leading '.' has to be matched explicitly, whereas
find's -name uses fnmatch() without FNM_PERIOD, so '*.h' matches
dotfiles as well. filechk writes its output to $(dir $@).tmp_$(notdir $@)
before renaming it into place, so such a scratch file, if it happens to
exist in $(obj) when the sub-make is parsed, is now picked up in
old-headers. It appears in neither generic-y, generated-y nor syscall-y,
is therefore classified as unwanted, and cmd_remove deletes it.
On x86 this races with archprepare, which lists both asm-generic and
arch/x86/include/generated/asm/cpufeaturemasks.h as prerequisites. Under
-j they run concurrently against the same directory, and the build fails
intermittently:
mv: cannot stat 'arch/x86/include/generated/asm/.tmp_cpufeaturemasks.h': No such file or directory
make[1]: *** [arch/x86/Makefile:269: arch/x86/include/generated/asm/cpufeaturemasks.h] Error 1
The same commit also converted the generic wrapper rule to filechk, so
those wrappers now create .tmp_*.h in $(obj) too and can race among
themselves.
Restore the previous behaviour by excluding dotfiles from the sweep.
Subdirectories, which is what the find(1) conversion was for, keep being
descended into. While at it, quote the -name argument: it is currently
expanded by the shell against the build directory before find sees it.

Replace "expression" with "identifier" in the declaration of hdev.
This is necessary because hdev is used as the name of a function
parameter.
Move the two uses of @p2 to the relevant function names.
Convert <... ...>, meaning that the contained pattern is optional,
to use ..., when any, and exists. This requires that the function
contain calls to hid_hw_start, etc, which reduces the set of files
that are considered for matching against this pattern.

In the object allocation loop, when kzalloc() for funcs fails, the
cleanup loop uses `objs[i].funcs` instead of `objs[j].funcs`. Since
`objs[i].funcs` is still NULL at that point, it repeatedly calls
kfree(NULL) and leaks all previously allocated funcs arrays.

The 'looped' rule collects the returns inside a for loop to
prevent 'err' from reporting them. It searches every for loop in
the file, and on files with large loop bodies the search explodes.
For example, kernel/bpf/verifier.c runs for over 200 seconds,
almost entirely in 'looped' according to --profile. Since the
kernel .cocciconfig sets a 200 second timeout, coccicheck silently
skips the file.
To avoid this, collect the candidate returns first, so that
'looped' checks only those positions. 'err' then excludes what
'looped' found.
Every return that 'err' can report is also a candidate, so the
same returns are excluded as before and the output does not change.
A report-mode run over every .c file in the tree produces identical
output.
So verifier.c now finishes well within the timeout, in a few
seconds.

The rules that report an opencoded min() or max() search every
function body, even when the file contains nothing to find.
To avoid this, collect the candidates first and run the search only
when one exists. A candidate is any conditional expression whose
condition is a comparison.
Every opencoded min() or max() is also a candidate, so the same
opportunities are reported as before and the output does not
change. A report-mode run over every .c file in the tree produces
identical output.

The 'balanced' rule collects the locks that are taken and released
under the same condition, to prevent them from being reported as a
double lock. It runs on every file that contains a lock call.
To avoid this, collect the double-lock candidates first, so that
'balanced' runs only when one exists. The report then excludes what
'balanced' found.
Every double lock that can be reported is also a candidate, so the
same reports are made as before and the output does not change. A

Under `CONFIG_LTO_CLANG` + `CONFIG_RUST_INLINE_HELPERS`, one may hit
`objtool` errors such as:
vmlinux.o: error: objtool: _R..._3Gsp4boot+0xd6a:
can't find jump dest instruction at .text._R..._3Gsp4boot+0x1dfd
The reason is that in such builds, the Clang invocation that compiles
the combined Rust plus helpers bitcode emits LLVM bitcode (again) --
the final code generation happens in the linker's LTO step, which the
`-mllvm` trap options passed to Clang do not reach.
This, in turn, means that unreachable traps are missing, and the
impossible paths do not merely fallthrough to the next symbol, but past
the end of their own section, since LTO builds place each function in
its own section.
Thus filter `CC_FLAGS_LTO` out of the Clang invocation, so that it always
emits machine code directly, with the traps in place.

When `CONFIG_RUST_INLINE_HELPERS` is enabled, it is possible to hit
`objtool` warnings like:
vmlinux.o: warning: objtool: _R..._4cmdq12CommandToGsp4init()
falls through to next function _R..._4core5array4iter8IntoIterRShKj3_EEEBa_()
`rustc` normally emits traps for unreachable paths. However, under
`CONFIG_RUST_INLINE_HELPERS=y`, `rustc` emits LLVM bitcode and Clang
performs final code generation after the helper bitcode is linked,
but Clang does not trap unreachable IR by default.
In turn, this means `objtool` follows compiler-generated impossible Rust
`enum` paths through alignment padding into the next function, resulting
in fallthrough warnings.
Thus pass the LLVM `trap-unreachable` option to the final Clang invocation
and suppress traps immediately after `noreturn` calls, which `objtool`
already recognizes as dead ends. The combination of both flags makes it
match `rustc`'s behavior.
Rust 1.85.0 (the minimum supported one) supports LLVM >= 18, and both
flags are available in LLVM 18.

silent data corruption
- "mm/damon: refactor damon_{start,stop,commit}() for simple error
handling" (SJ Park)
Refactor the DAMON core API functions to guarantee that all contexts
are fully stopped when damon_start(), damon_stop(), or damon_commit()
fail, eliminating the need for complex and error-prone caller-side
cleanup code
- "Keep tail page private zero at free and folio split" (Zi Yan)
Add checks to ensure tail_page->private is zero when freeing compound
or high-order pages and when promoting tail pages during large folio
splits. By validating these fields at free and split time, it allows
the removal of redundant private field clearing inside
prep_compound_tail()
- "mm: drop redundant lru_add_drain in anon folio reuse paths" (Barry
Song)
Eliminate redundant lru_add_drain() calls in
wp_can_reuse_anon_folio() and do_swap_page() to reduce LRU lock
contention and system overhead
By validating folio refcounts against the LRU cache before draining
and removing unnecessary drains in the swap path, it achieves up to a
30.5% reduction in drain calls during heavy swap workloads
- "mm: clean up folio LRU and swap declarations" (Jianyue Wu)
Reorganize folio LRU and swap code by relocating page-cluster state
to mm/swap_state.c, renaming mm/swap.c to mm/folio.c, and moving
MM-internal reclaim declarations into mm/internal.h.
- "userfaultfd: working set tracking for VM guest memory" (Kiryl
Shutsemau)
Add userfaultfd support for tracking the working set of VM guest
memory, so a VMM can identify hot pages and reclaim cold ones to
tiered or remote storage
- "mm: remove CONFIG_HAVE_BOOTMEM_INFO_NODE (Part 2)" (David
Hildenbrand)
Remove the remaining pieces of CONFIG_HAVE_BOOTMEM_INFO_NODE,
performing some smaller cleanups around freeing of reserved vmemmap
pages on the way.
- "mm/damon: update probe hits for runtime parameter commits" (SJ Park)
Ensure that DAMON's probe_hits attribute counter is properly updated
when monitoring intervals are changed at runtime, matching the
behavior of nr_accesses. To achieve this, it refactors and renames
existing helper functions for shared use, applies the updates to
probe_hits, and handles edge cases in damon_probe_hits_mvsum() to
maintain measurement accuracy.
- "KSM: performance optimizations for rmap_walk_ksm" (xu xin)
Resolve a severe KSM reverse-mapping performance bottleneck where
thousands of split VMAs sharing a single anon_vma cause extended lock
contention.
By adding an interval-filtering check during the rmap walk, it
reduces worst-case anon_vma lock hold times from over 500ms down to
under 2ms, preventing application freezes and latency spikes under
memory pressure.
- "mm: split a couple of headers from internal.h" (Mike Rapoport)
Split declarations related to mm_init, memblock, vmalloc and sparse
into new headers
- "KSM: use linear_page_index in collect_procs_ksm()" (xu xin)
Apply the interval tree optimization from rmap_walk_ksm() to
collect_procs_ksm() to avoid iterating over non-matching VMAs during
KSM memory error handling.
It hoists loop-invariant address initialization and restricts the
anon_vma_interval_tree_foreach walk to a targeted page offset range,
reducing redundant checks and improving lookup efficiency.
- "selftests/mm: avoid false failures in hugetlb and KSM tests" (Sayali
Patil)
Fix issues in the hugetlb and KSM MM selftest categories that can
report failures when the prerequisites for the tests are not
satisfied
- "mm/damon: introduce data attributes only monitoring" (SJ Park)
Introduce attribute-weighted region management in DAMON, allowing
users to prioritize specific data attributes (such as page sizes or
cgroups) over or instead of access monitoring.
By assigning weights to attribute probes, DAMON can completely
disable access tracking and adjust monitoring regions based on
weighted probe-hit counters to optimize monitoring quality for
attribute-focused workloads.
- "mm/hmm: Add mmap lock-drop support for userfaultfd-backed mappings"
(Stanislav Kinsburskii)
Extend hmm_range_fault() to support userfaultfd-backed regions by
allowing the mmap lock to be dropped during fault handling via a new
hmm_range_fault_locked() helper.
By accepting a locked pointer and signaling retry status when lock
release occurs, it enables page fault resolution in userfaultfd
regions while preserving backward compatibility for existing callers.
- "mm: make VMA page offset handling more consistent" (Lorenzo Stoakes)
Clean up and standardize how vma->vm_pgoff is accessed and
manipulated across file-backed and anonymous mappings in the kernel
It introduces dedicated helper functions such as vma_start_pgoff(),
vma_end_pgoff(), vma_set_pgoff() and linear_page_delta() while
renaming rmap interval tree helpers to better reflect their
functionality.
These changes establish a cleaner foundation for future work that
will unify virtual page offset indexing for all anonymous and CoW'd
folios.
- "mm: handle device-private PMDs in walk callbacks" (Usama Arif)
Address kernel panics and state corruption caused by MM walk
callbacks reaching non-present device-private PMD swap entries
created during HMM migrations
It ensures that functions which acquire pmd_trans_huge_lock()
