SOCK_RAW packet sockets incorrectly drop VLAN-tagged GSO packets
without VIRTIO_NET_HDR_F_NEEDS_CSUM.
packet_parse_headers() sets skb->protocol to VLAN but advances
skb->network_header past the VLAN tags. virtio_net_hdr_to_skb()
then flow dissects these packets, which parses the network header as a
VLAN tag, and fails.
Call packet_parse_headers() after virtio_net_hdr_to_skb() instead.
This matches tun_get_user() and tap_get_user() and thus simplifies
overall complexity.
Commit 01fdecc0480d ("net: packet: fix wrong transport_header when
sending VLAN-tagged frame") fixed the same issue for the transport
header probe in packet_parse_headers(). That probe is now skipped if
virtio_net_hdr_to_skb() already set the transport header, avoiding a
redundant dissection.
Implementation details:
- Do not set skb->protocol to the RX wildcard ETH_P_ALL. SOCK_RAW then
derives it from the link layer header, as before. SOCK_DGRAM now
leaves it 0, or derives it from gso_type for GSO with NEEDS_CSUM.
- Keep virtio_net_hdr_set_proto() last, so that the link layer protocol
takes priority over gso_type.

packet_rcv_spkt() restores the link layer header with
skb_push(skb, skb->data - skb_mac_header(skb));
That subtraction is only meaningful when the device actually has a link
layer header. packet_rcv() and tpacket_rcv() both wrap it in
dev_has_header(), which is also the predicate the block comment at the
top of the file states the restore in terms of; packet_rcv_spkt() does
not. commit d549699048b4 ("net/packet: fix packet receive on L3
devices without visible hard header") introduced the helper and changed
the two call sites, and this one stayed behind.
A device without a visible ll header can leave skb->mac_header at the
0xFFFF sentinel that __alloc_skb() initialises it to. A CAN skb does:
init_can_skb() sets pkt_type and ip_summed but does not reset the
headers, and commit 9f10374bb024 ("can: remove private CAN skb
headroom infrastructure") dropped the skb_reset_*_header() calls that
used to be there. skb_mac_header() is then 0xFFFF, the length becomes
a large negative number and skb_push() reports it through
skb_under_panic() -- from softirq context, so it is a full system panic
even with panic_on_oops=0:

Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt
The socket type is reachable: packet_create() accepts SOCK_PACKET
alongside SOCK_RAW and SOCK_DGRAM behind the same CAP_NET_RAW check,
and neither the socket length nor a capability check keeps it away
from a CAN interface.
The missing skb_reset_*_header() calls in init_can_skb() are a
regression in their own right and are being fixed separately, but a
packet socket should not turn a link layer that did not initialise its
mac header into a kernel panic. Guard the push the way the other two
receive paths do.
Tested on v7.3-rc5 under QEMU with a slcan device on a pty, which is
the driver RX path: vcan does not reproduce it, because can_send()
resets the headers on the way out. One SOCK_PACKET socket bound to
can0 and one frame written into the line discipline panics an
unpatched kernel with the trace above; the same image with this patch
prints no panic and powers off normally. Both kernels are this tree,
defconfig plus CONFIG_CAN_SLCAN=y, differing only in this hunk.

tpacket_snd() drains every SEND_REQUEST frame in a TX ring and adds
each valid packet length to the signed int len_sum. Userspace can
recycle completed frames concurrently, so a single blocking send call
is not bounded by the ring size.
After enough successful transmissions len_sum wraps into the negative
range. In particular, 65536 65535-byte frames followed by a 65007-byte
frame produce 0xfffffdef, or -EIOCBQUEUED. sock_sendmsg_nosec() treats
that as an impossible return and triggers a BUG. On systems configured
to panic on oops, a CAP_NET_RAW holder can panic the host kernel.
Stop before the next frame would make the byte count exceed INT_MAX.
The positive short count leaves that frame pending for a later send
call.
A two-thread TPACKET_V2 reproducer triggered the BUG on an arm64 build
of Linux 7.3-rc4. With this change, the same reproducer returned the
expected positive short count without an oops.

prb_calc_retire_blk_tmo() computes in 32-bit int arithmetic:
mbits = (blk_size_in_bytes * 8) / (1024 * 1024);
If I'm reading the validation right, tp_block_size is user
controlled and packet_set_ring() only rejects values that are <= 0
as int or not page aligned, so a 256MiB block goes right through
(and alloc_one_pg_vec_page() even has a vzalloc fallback for it).
0x10000000 * 8 wraps to INT_MIN, and on a NIC reporting 1 Gbps
(div == 1) the function ends up returning -2047.
The condition is actually (8 * size) mod 2^32 >= 2^31 && div == 1,
so the trigger set is [256,512), [768,1024), [1280,1536) and
[1792,2048) MiB. Other sizes wrap to non-negative values and faster
links divide the unsigned value back below 2^31, which is why this
doesn't blow up for everyone.
What makes it fatal is what happens next in init_prb_bdqc():
p1->interval_ktime = ms_to_ktime(prb_calc_retire_blk_tmo(...));
hrtimer_start(&p1->retire_blk_timer, p1->interval_ktime,
HRTIMER_MODE_REL_SOFT);
A negative relative timeout expires immediately. The callback
unconditionally returns HRTIMER_RESTART, and hrtimer_forward() turns
the negative interval into hrtimer_resolution:
if (interval < hrtimer_resolution)
interval = hrtimer_resolution;
So the SOFT timer re-fires at the maximum rate forever, holding
sk_receive_queue.lock each pass. One CPU spins in softirq until the
socket is closed. Repeat with more rings and the machine is gone.
The overflow itself is ancient - it was introduced together with
TPACKET_V3 in f6fb8f100b80 ("af-packet: TPACKET_V3 flexible buffer
implementation."). Its effect prior to f7460d2989fa ("net:
af_packet: Use hrtimer to do the retire operation", v6.18) was not
as clear-cut, though: the return value was stored into an unsigned
short retire_blk_tov, so a negative result was truncated, and a
0-jiffy delay loop could be programmed as well. Neither is nearly
as detrimental as the immediate maximum-rate spin the hrtimer
conversion turned it into.
(Unrelated to CVE-2019-20812 - that one was the ethtool failure path
returning 0, which now returns DEFAULT_PRB_RETIRE_TOV.)
Reproducer, needs CAP_NET_RAW (a --network host container has it by
default) and a 1 Gbps NIC (QEMU e1000 works):
int fd = socket(AF_PACKET, SOCK_RAW, htons(ETH_P_ALL));
bind(fd, ...);
int v = TPACKET_V3;
setsockopt(fd, SOL_PACKET, PACKET_VERSION, &v, sizeof(v));
struct tpacket_req3 req = {
.tp_block_size = 0x10000000,
.tp_block_nr = 1,
.tp_frame_size = 2048,
.tp_frame_nr = 0x10000000 / 2048,
.tp_retire_blk_tov = 0,
};
setsockopt(fd, SOL_PACKET, PACKET_RX_RING, &req, sizeof(req));
Compute in 64 bits instead. The operands are already bounded by the
existing validation, so nothing else changes. If you'd prefer a
different fix, just say so and I'll respin.

tpacket_snd sends skbs with frags pointing into its ring slots. Slots
are released when skb->destructor is called.
A call to skb_orphan calls skb->destructor before the skb is freed.
This can cause the slot to be reused while still linked into the skb.
Switch to standard zerocopy completion (ubuf_info) so the slot is only
released once all references to the payload are freed or copied.
Restore skb->destructor to standard sock_wfree.
The ubuf_info completion callback can be called with a NULL skb, but
only from net_zcopy_put and related API, used by zerocopy implementations
that hold their own reference on the uarg, such as MSG_ZEROCOPY. This
uarg is only ever completed from skb_zcopy_clear, so skb is always set.
To prevent userspace from aliasing in-flight state on shared ring
slots, allocate tpacket_uarg per packet, rather than per slot. This
adds a small allocation to the transmit path. Use standard kmalloc to
allow backporting to stable kernels.
The uarg holds an sk_wmem_alloc reference, rather than an sk_refcnt
reference. packet_free_tx_ring waits on sk_wmem_alloc before freeing
the ring pages. Always allocate vec->deferred for tx_ring so page-backed
rings also wait on sk_wmem_alloc when skb_copy_ubufs drops page refs
before calling tpacket_ubuf_complete.
Drop the tx_ring.pg_vec test that tpacket_destruct_skb performed before
accessing the slot. The sk_wmem_alloc reference now guarantees that the
slot is valid. The test is also not sufficient by itself, as it reads
pg_vec without pg_vec_lock, so it can race with packet_set_ring.
As a result a slot is released when its payload is copied, which can
be before transmission (e.g., in skb_orphan_frags_rx). If copied
before skb_tx_timestamp() is called, no slot timestamp is recorded,
similar to when skb_orphan() was called early in the datapath before
this patch.
Revert the now unused previous skb_zcopy_.._nouarg infra.
Depends on commit 992cc9f94ca9 ("net/packet: defer vmalloc TX_RING
free until skbs finish").

tpacket_req3.tp_sizeof_priv is an unsigned int, and packet_set_ring()
validates the full value against the block size. init_prb_bdqc() then
stores it in the unsigned short blk_sizeof_priv field.
Commit 2b6867c2ce76 ("net/packet: fix overflow in check for priv area
size") fixed the validation arithmetic, but an accepted value above
USHRT_MAX still narrows when it is stored.
For a 131072-byte block, tp_sizeof_priv=65536 is valid. The narrowing
makes offset_to_first_pkt 48 instead of 65584, so packet records can be
placed in the private area that userspace asked the kernel to preserve.
blk_sizeof_priv is internal state, so widen it to hold the validated
UAPI value.

Commit 61fad6816fc1 ("net/packet: tpacket_rcv: avoid a producer race
condition") added rx_owner_map and made tpacket_rcv() claim a V1 or V2
ring slot before converting the virtio-net header. If the conversion
fails, the drop path leaves the slot claimed.
With a one-frame TPACKET_V2 ring, an unsupported UDP GSO packet leaves
the only slot unavailable, so the ring also drops the next valid packet.
Clear the ownership bit on this error path. TPACKET_V3 already clears
its block state here.

syzbot reported BUG() in sock_sendmsg_nosec(). [0]
The problem is that tpacket_parse_header() casts user-provided
tpacket_hdr.tp_len, which is u32, to int.
If the length is larger than INT_MAX, the following condition
in tpacket_parse_header() passes,
if (unlikely(tp_len > size_max))
and any negative value can be returned to the caller, up to
sock_sendmsg_nosec().
The repro set tpacket_hdr.tp_len to 0xfffffdef, which is cast
to -EIOCBQUEUED (-529), triggering BUG() in sock_sendmsg_nosec().

...
syscall(__NR_write, /*fd=*/r[0], /*buf=*/0x200000000000ul, /*count=*/1ul);
Let's define the local tp_len as u32 in tpacket_parse_header().

AF_PACKET TX_RING skbs keep a raw pointer to their ring frame. The skb
page references preserve page-backed ring blocks after pg_vec is freed,
but they do not preserve a vmalloc mapping.
tpacket_destruct_skb() currently drops the pending reference before
writing the timestamp and TP_STATUS_AVAILABLE to the frame. Move the
decrement after those stores. The smp_wmb() in __packet_set_status()
orders the frame stores before the decrement.
Also recheck pending TX frames under pg_vec_lock before non-closing
ring replacement, so a racing send cannot add a pending skb between
the initial check and the ring swap.
Ring allocation can produce a mixture of page-backed and vmalloc-backed
blocks. Allocate deferred-work storage during TX ring setup when the
first vmalloc-backed block is encountered, and keep its pointer in the
pg_vec allocation header. If allocation fails, return -ENOMEM from ring
setup. On socket close, a non-NULL pointer identifies a vmalloc-backed
vector without a scan. If TX skbs remain, defer the whole vector to
system_long_wq.
After pg_vec is detached, a late destructor can skip the pending
decrement. Use socket write-memory accounting as the deferred lifetime
gate instead: an skb remains charged through its final sock_wfree(),
after all ring-frame accesses. The delayed work retains a socket
reference and reschedules itself until no TX skbs remain.
Move pending_refcnt release to packet_sock_destruct() so late skb
destructors and deferred cleanup can safely use it after
packet_release(). Page-backed teardown remains synchronous, and no lock
is added to the TX completion hot path.

In packet_parse_headers(), when processing a VLAN-tagged frame,
skb_set_network_header() is called to advance network_header past the
VLAN tag to the inner protocol header. skb_probe_transport_header() is
then called with skb->protocol still set to the outer VLAN EtherType
(e.g. ETH_P_8021Q), while nhoff (derived from skb_network_offset())
already points past the VLAN tag to the inner protocol header.
In __skb_flow_dissect(), proto is initialized to ETH_P_8021Q and nhoff
points past the VLAN tag. When the dissector hits case ETH_P_8021Q, it
reads a struct vlan_hdr at nhoff via __skb_header_pointer(), but that
offset contains the inner protocol header (e.g. an IP header). The bytes
are misinterpreted as a VLAN header, yielding a garbage encapsulated
EtherType that matches no known protocol. The dissector returns false,
so skb_probe_transport_header() never calls skb_set_transport_header(),
leaving transport_header at its uninitialized sentinel value (~0U).
Move skb_probe_transport_header() to before skb_set_network_header(). At
the time skb_probe_transport_header() is called, network_header still
points to the VLAN header, so nhoff correctly points to the VLAN header.
The flow dissector can then parse the VLAN header, extract the inner
EtherType, and advance nhoff to the inner protocol header, allowing
transport_header to be set correctly.

tpacket_snd() reads dev->hard_header_len independently for skb
allocation and header construction in tpacket_fill_skb(). Concurrent
netdevice reconfiguration can therefore make the reserved headroom
smaller than the amount later pushed, or make copylen - hard_header_len
negative.
Snapshot hard_header_len once before processing ring frames and use it
for the frame limit, headroom allocation, copy length, and skb
construction. Pass the snapshot to tpacket_fill_skb().
The separate SOCK_DGRAM consistency problem between hard_header_len and

packet_snd() reads dev->hard_header_len multiple times while allocating
and constructing an skb. Device reconfiguration can change this value
concurrently, for example through bonding device type changes.
For SOCK_RAW, packet_snd() can save a larger value in reserve and later
allocate headroom using a smaller value. Moving skb->data back by reserve
then places it before skb->head, and the following copy from userspace can
attempt an out-of-bounds write.
packet_sendmsg_spkt() has the same issue because it calculates its
reservation and header offset from separate reads before dropping the RCU
read lock to allocate the skb.
Add LL_RESERVED_SPACE_EX() for callers that already saved a header length.
Read hard_header_len once in packet_snd() and use it for allocation and
construction. In packet_sendmsg_spkt(), preserve the allocation-time value
through the device lookup retry.
The separate SOCK_DGRAM consistency problem between hard_header_len and
header_ops->create is not addressed here.

packet_set_ring() updates the RX ring state under sk_receive_queue.lock,
but used to publish the tpacket receive mode through po->prot_hook.func
after releasing that lock. packet_poll() and packet_recvmsg() can then
run the pressure clearing path after the ring has been cleared while
still seeing tpacket_rcv, causing __packet_rcv_has_room() to dereference
stale or NULL ring storage.
Move the existing receive hook assignment into the same
sk_receive_queue.lock section as the ring state update. Keep the
assignment otherwise unchanged, including on TX ring reconfiguration, to
avoid adding behavior changes that are not required for the fix.
Serialize packet_recvmsg() pressure clearing with the same queue lock
only after PACKET_SOCK_PRESSURE has been observed. If the flag is clear
and the socket has moved away from tpacket_rcv, packet_set_ring() has
already detached the socket and waited for synchronize_net(), so no new
packet input can set the flag again.
packet_poll() already holds sk_receive_queue.lock, so it uses the new
unlocked helper directly.

packet_parse_headers() resets the MAC header only for a SOCK_RAW frame
whose socket did not bind a protocol. A protocol-bound SOCK_RAW socket,
any SOCK_DGRAM frame, and the legacy SOCK_PACKET path therefore leave
skb->mac_header unset here.
For frames sent via __dev_queue_xmit() this is harmless: it resets the
MAC header unconditionally. But the packet-socket PACKET_QDISC_BYPASS
path uses dev_direct_xmit(), which does not, so the frame reaches
ndo_start_xmit() with the MAC header unset. A driver that reads
eth_hdr(skb) on transmit then dereferences skb->head + (u16)~0, an
out-of-bounds access ~64 KiB past the head -- the same class fixed for
one consumer in commit f5089008f90c ("macsec: do not read an unset MAC
header in macsec_encrypt()").
packet_parse_headers() runs only on the transmit path, where skb->data
points at the start of the L2 header for every packet-socket type
regardless of its length: SOCK_RAW and SOCK_PACKET carry a user-supplied
header and SOCK_DGRAM has one built by dev_hard_header(). Reset the MAC
header unconditionally, mirroring __dev_queue_xmit(), so the frame is
anchored on the bypass path too.

packet_set_ring() temporarily detaches a socket from packet delivery while
reconfiguring its ring. It records the previous running state, clears
po->num, unregisters the protocol hook when needed, drops po->bind_lock,
and later restores po->num and re-registers the hook from the saved
was_running value.
That unlocked window can race with NETDEV_UNREGISTER. The notifier can
observe the socket as not running, skip __unregister_prot_hook(), and
invalidate the per-socket binding by setting po->ifindex to -1 and clearing
po->prot_hook.dev. A one-member fanout group can still retain its shared
fanout hook device pointer. When packet_set_ring() resumes, re-registering
solely from the stale was_running state can re-add the fanout hook after
the device has been unregistered.
Treat po->ifindex == -1 as an invalidated binding after reacquiring
po->bind_lock. This is distinct from ifindex 0, the normal
unbound/wildcard state: ifindex -1 marks an existing device binding that
was invalidated when the device was unregistered. Restore po->num as
before, but do not re-register the hook if device unregister already
detached the socket.

In tpacket_snd(), when PACKET_VNET_HDR is enabled, vnet_hdr points
directly into the mmap'd TX ring buffer shared with userspace. The
kernel validates the header via __packet_snd_vnet_parse() but then
re-reads all fields later in virtio_net_hdr_to_skb(). A concurrent
userspace thread can modify the vnet_hdr fields between validation
and use, bypassing all safety checks.
The non-TPACKET path (packet_snd()) already correctly copies vnet_hdr
to a stack-local variable. All other vnet_hdr consumers in the kernel
(tun.c, tap.c, virtio_net.c) also use stack copies. The TPACKET TX
path is the only caller of virtio_net_hdr_to_skb() that reads directly
from user-controlled shared memory.
Fix this by copying vnet_hdr from the mmap'd ring buffer to a
stack-local variable before validation and use, consistent with the
approach used in packet_snd() and all other callers.

Convert AF_PACKET's getsockopt implementation to use the new
getsockopt_iter callback with sockopt_t.

- Replace (char __user *optval, int __user *optlen) with sockopt_t *opt
- Use opt->optlen for buffer length (input) and returned size (output)
- Use copy_to_iter() instead of put_user()/copy_to_user()
- For PACKET_HDRLEN which reads from optval: use opt->iter_in with
copy_from_iter() for the input read, then the common opt->iter_out
copy_to_iter() epilogue handles the output

Pull vfs i_ino updates from Christian Brauner:
"For historical reasons, the inode->i_ino field is an unsigned long,
which means that it's 32 bits on 32 bit architectures. This has caused
a number of filesystems to implement hacks to hash a 64-bit identifier
into a 32-bit field, and deprives us of a universal identifier field
for an inode.
This changes the inode->i_ino field from an unsigned long to a u64.
This shouldn't make any material difference on 64-bit hosts, but
32-bit hosts will see struct inode grow by at least 4 bytes. This
could have effects on slabcache sizes and field alignment.
The bulk of the changes are to format strings and tracepoints, since
the kernel itself doesn't care that much about the i_ino field. The
first patch changes some vfs function arguments, so check that one out
carefully.
With this change, we may be able to shrink some inode structures. For
instance, struct nfs_inode has a fileid field that holds the 64-bit
inode number. With this set of changes, that field could be
eliminated. I'd rather leave that sort of cleanups for later just to
keep this simple"

`packet_release()` has a race window where `NETDEV_UP` can re-register a
socket into a fanout group's `arr[]` array. The re-registration is not
cleaned up by `fanout_release()`, leaving a dangling pointer in the fanout
array.
`packet_release()` does NOT zero `po->num` in its `bind_lock` section.
After releasing `bind_lock`, `po->num` is still non-zero and `po->ifindex`
still matches the bound device. A concurrent `packet_notifier(NETDEV_UP)`
that already found the socket in `sklist` can re-register the hook.
For fanout sockets, this re-registration calls `__fanout_link(sk, po)`
which adds the socket back into `f->arr[]` and increments `f->num_members`,
but does NOT increment `f->sk_ref`.
The fix sets `po->num` to zero in `packet_release` while `bind_lock` is
held to prevent NETDEV_UP from linking, preventing the race window.
This bug was found following an additional audit with Claude Code based
on CVE-2025-38617.

inode->i_ino is being converted to a u64. sock.sk_ino (which caches the
inode number) must also be widened to avoid truncation on 32-bit
architectures where unsigned long is only 32 bits.
Change sk_ino from unsigned long to u64, and update the return type
of sock_i_ino() to match. Fix all format strings that print the
result of sock_i_ino() (%lu -> %llu), and widen the intermediate
variables and function parameters in the diag modules that were
using int to hold the inode number.
Note that the UAPI socket diag structures (inet_diag_msg.idiag_inode,
unix_diag_msg.udiag_ino, etc.) are all __u32 and cannot be changed
without breaking the ABI. The assignments to those fields will
silently truncate, which is the existing behavior.

This converts some of the visually simpler cases that have been split
over multiple lines. I only did the ones that are easy to verify the
resulting diff by having just that final GFP_KERNEL argument on the next
line.
Somebody should probably do a proper coccinelle script for this, but for
me the trivial script actually resulted in an assertion failure in the
middle of the script. I probably had made it a bit _too_ trivial.
So after fighting that far a while I decided to just do some of the
syntactically simpler cases with variations of the previous 'sed'
scripts.
The more syntactically complex multi-line cases would mostly really want
whitespace cleanup anyway.

This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using
git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' |
xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/'
to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL
argument to just drop that argument.
Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly
more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered:
they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and
the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically.
For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate
conversion.

This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from
scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to
avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and
instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union
object instances:
Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...)
Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...)
Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...)
(where TYPE may also be *VAR)
The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning
"TYPE *".

Revert struct sockaddr from flexible array to fixed 14-byte "sa_data",
to solve over 36,000 -Wflex-array-member-not-at-end warnings, since
struct sockaddr is embedded within many network structs.
With socket/proto sockaddr-based internal APIs switched to use struct
sockaddr_unsized, there should be no more uses of struct sockaddr that
depend on reading beyond the end of struct sockaddr::sa_data that might
trigger bounds checking.
Comparing an x86_64 "allyesconfig" vmlinux build before and after this
patch showed no new "ud1" instructions from CONFIG_UBSAN_BOUNDS nor any
new "field-spanning" memcpy CONFIG_FORTIFY_SOURCE instrumentations.
