2026-04-02erofs: include the trailing NUL in FS_IOC_GETFSLABELZhan Xusheng1-1/+1
erofs_ioctl_get_volume_label() passes strlen(sbi->volume_name) as the length to copy_to_user(), which copies the label string without the trailing NUL byte. Since FS_IOC_GETFSLABEL callers expect a NUL-terminated string in the FSLABEL_MAX-sized buffer and may not pre-zero the buffer, this can cause userspace to read past the label into uninitialised stack memory. Fix this by using strlen() + 1 to include the NUL terminator, consistent with how ext4 and xfs implement FS_IOC_GETFSLABEL. 2026-02-23erofs: allow sharing page cache with the same aops onlyHongbo Li1-1/+6
Inode with identical data but different @aops cannot be mixed because the page cache is managed by different subsystems (e.g., @aops for compressed on-disk inodes cannot handle plain on-disk inodes). In this patch, we never allow inodes to share the page cache among plain, compressed, and fileio cases. When a shared inode is created, we initialize @aops that is the same as the initial real inode, and subsequent inodes cannot share the page cache if the inferred @aops differ from the corresponding shared inode. This is reasonable as a first step because, in typical use cases, if an inode is compressible, it will fall into compressed inodes across different filesystem images unless users use plain filesystems. However, in that cases, users will use plain filesystems all the time. 2026-02-03erofs: separate plain and compressed filesystems formallyGao Xiang1-4/+10
The EROFS on-disk format uses a tiny, plain metadata design that prioritizes performance and minimizes complex inconsistencies against common writable disk filesystems (almost all serious metadata inconsistency cannot happen in well-designed immutable filesystems like EROFS). EROFS deliberately avoids artificial design flaws to eliminate serious security risks from untrusted remote sources by design, although human-made implementation bugs can still happen sometimes. Currently, there is no strict check to prevent compressed inodes, especially LZ4-compressed inodes, from being read in plain filesystems. Starting with erofs-utils 1.0 and Linux 5.3, LZ4_0PADDING sb feature is automatically enabled for LZ4-compressed EROFS images to support in-place decompression. Furthermore, since Linux 5.4 LTS is no longer supported, we no longer need to handle ancient LZ4-compressed EROFS images generated by erofs-utils prior to 1.0. To formally distinguish different filesystem types for improved security: - Use the presence of LZ4_0PADDING or a non-zero `dsb->u1.lz4_max_distance` as a marker for compressed filesystems containing LZ4-compressed inodes only; - For other algorithms, use `dsb->u1.available_compr_algs` bitmap. Note: LZ4_0PADDING has been supported since Linux 5.4 (the first formal kernel version), so exposing it via sysfs is no longer necessary and is now deprecated (but remain it for five more years until 2031): `dsb->u1` has been strictly non-zero for all EROFS images containing compressed inodes starting with erofs-utils v1.3 and it is actually a much better marker for compressed filesystems. Similar to commit 91ef18b567da ("ext4: mark inodes without acls in __ext4_iget()"), the ACL state won't be read when the file owner performs a lookup, and the RCU fast path for lookups won't work because the ACL state remains unknown. If there are no extended attributes, or if the xattr filter indicates that no ACL xattr is present, call cache_no_acl() directly. Thanks to the meta buffer infrastructure, metadata-compressed inodes are just read from the metabox inode instead of the blockdevice (or backing file) inode. The same is true for shared extended attributes. When metadata compression is enabled, inode numbers are divided from on-disk NIDs because of non-LTS 32-bit application compatibility. 2025-03-17erofs: support dot-omitted directoriesGao Xiang1-1/+3
There's no need to record "." dirents in the directory data (while they could be used for sanity checks, they aren't very useful.) Omitting "." dirents also improves directory data deduplication. Use a per-inode (instead of per-sb) flag to indicate if the "." dirent is omitted or not, ensuring compatibility with incremental builds. It also reuses EROFS_I_NLINK_1_BIT, as it has very limited use cases for directories with `nlink = 1`. Emit the "." entry as the last virtual dirent in the directory because it is _much_ less frequently used than the ".." dirent. It also keeps `f_pos` meaningful, as it strictly follows the directory data when it's less than i_size. 2025-03-17erofs: add 48-bit block addressing on-disk supportGao Xiang1-3/+3
The current 32-bit block addressing limits EROFS to a 16TiB maximum volume size with 4KiB blocks. However, several new use cases now require larger capacity support: - Massive datasets for model training in order to boost random sampling performance for each epoch; - Object storage clients using EROFS direct passthrough. This extends core on-disk structures to support 48-bit block addressing, such as inodes, device slots, and inode chunks. Additionally: - Expand superblock root NID to 8-byte `rootnid_8b` to enable full out-of-place update incremental builds; - Introduce `epoch` field in the superblock as well as add `mtime` field to 32-byte compact inodes for basic timestamp support. Refactor out the iop binding behavior out of the erofs_fill_symlink and move erofs_buf into the erofs_read_inode, so that erofs_fill_inode can only deal with inode operation bindings and can be decoupled from metabuf operations. This results in better calling conventions. Note that after this patch, we do not need erofs_buf and ofs as parameters any more when calling erofs_read_inode as all the data operations are now included in itself. 2024-09-10erofs: add file-backed mount supportGao Xiang1-1/+4
It actually has been around for years: For containers and other sandbox use cases, there will be thousands (and even more) of authenticated (sub)images running on the same host, unlike OS images. Of course, all scenarios can use the same EROFS on-disk format, but bdev-backed mounts just work well for OS images since golden data is dumped into real block devices. However, it's somewhat hard for container runtimes to manage and isolate so many unnecessary virtual block devices safely and efficiently [1]: they just look like a burden to orchestrators and file-backed mounts are preferred indeed. There were already enough attempts such as Incremental FS, the original ComposeFS and PuzzleFS acting in the same way for immutable fses. As for current EROFS users, ComposeFS, containerd and Android APEXs will be directly benefited from it. On the other hand, previous experimental feature "erofs over fscache" was once also intended to provide a similar solution (inspired by Incremental FS discussion [2]), but the following facts show file-backed mounts will be a better approach: - Fscache infrastructure has recently been moved into new Netfslib which is an unexpected dependency to EROFS really, although it originally claims "it could be used for caching other things such as ISO9660 filesystems too." [3] - It takes an unexpectedly long time to upstream Fscache/Cachefiles enhancements. For example, the failover feature took more than one year, and the deamonless feature is still far behind now; - Ongoing HSM "fanotify pre-content hooks" [4] together with this will perfectly supersede "erofs over fscache" in a simpler way since developers (mainly containerd folks) could leverage their existing caching mechanism entirely in userspace instead of strictly following the predefined in-kernel caching tree hierarchy. After "fanotify pre-content hooks" lands upstream to provide the same functionality, "erofs over fscache" will be removed then (as an EROFS internal improvement and EROFS will not have to bother with on-demand fetching and/or caching improvements anymore.) 2024-09-10erofs: fix incorrect symlink detection in fast symlinkGao Xiang1-14/+6
Fast symlink can be used if the on-disk symlink data is stored in the same block as the on-disk inode, so we don’t need to trigger another I/O for symlink data. However, currently fs correction could be reported _incorrectly_ if inode xattrs are too large. In fact, these should be valid images although they cannot be handled as fast symlinks. As commit 2e6506e1c4ee ("mm/migrate: fix deadlock in migrate_pages_batch() on large folios") has landed upstream, large folios can be safely enabled for compressed inodes since all prerequisites have already landed in 6.11-rc1. Stress tests has been running on my fleet for over 20 days without any regression. Additionally, users [1] have requested it for months. Since fscache can utilize iov_iter to write dest buffers, bio_vec can be used in this way too. To simplify this, pseudo bios are prepared and bio_vec will be filled with bio_add_page(). And a common .bi_end_io will be called directly to handle I/O completions. This carries acks from all relevant filesystems. The VFS always uses coarse-grained timestamps when updating the ctime and mtime after a change. This has the benefit of allowing filesystems to optimize away a lot of metadata updates, down to around 1 per jiffy, even when a file is under heavy writes. Unfortunately, this has always been an issue when we're exporting via NFSv3, which relies on timestamps to validate caches. A lot of changes can happen in a jiffy, so timestamps aren't sufficient to help the client decide to invalidate the cache. Even with NFSv4, a lot of exported filesystems don't properly support a change attribute and are subject to the same problems with timestamp granularity. Other applications have similar issues with timestamps (e.g., backup applications). If we were to always use fine-grained timestamps, that would improve the situation, but that becomes rather expensive, as the underlying filesystem would have to log a lot more metadata updates. This introduces fine-grained timestamps that are used when they are actively queried. This uses the 31st bit of the ctime tv_nsec field to indicate that something has queried the inode for the mtime or ctime. When this flag is set, on the next mtime or ctime update, the kernel will fetch a fine-grained timestamp instead of the usual coarse-grained one. As POSIX generally mandates that when the mtime changes, the ctime must also change the kernel always stores normalized ctime values, so only the first 30 bits of the tv_nsec field are ever used. Filesytems can opt into this behavior by setting the FS_MGTIME flag in the fstype. Filesystems that don't set this flag will continue to use coarse-grained timestamps. Various preparatory changes, fixes and cleanups are included: - Fixup all relevant places where POSIX requires updating ctime together with mtime. This is a wide-range of places and all maintainers provided necessary Acks. - Add new accessors for inode->i_ctime directly and change all callers to rely on them. Plain accesses to inode->i_ctime are now gone and it is accordingly rename to inode->__i_ctime and commented as requiring accessors. - Extend generic_fillattr() to pass in a request mask mirroring in a sense the statx() uapi. generic_fillattr just fills in the entire stat struct indiscriminately today, copying data from the inode. There is at least one attribute (STATX_CHANGE_COOKIE) that can have side effects when it is reported, and we're looking at adding more with the addition of multigrain timestamps. Add a request_mask argument to generic_fillattr and have most callers just pass in the value that is passed to getattr. Have other callers (e.g. ksmbd) just pass in STATX_BASIC_STATS. Also move the setting of STATX_CHANGE_COOKIE into generic_fillattr. 2023-04-17erofs: set block size to the on-disk block sizeJingbo Xu1-1/+2
Set the block size to that specified in on-disk superblock. Also remove the hard constraint of PAGE_SIZE block size for the uncompressed device backend. This constraint is temporarily remained for compressed device and fscache backend, as there is more work needed to handle the condition where the block size is not equal to PAGE_SIZE. It is worth noting that the on-disk block size is read prior to erofs_superblock_csum_verify(), as the read block size is needed in the latter. Besides, later we are going to make erofs refer to tar data blobs (which is 512-byte aligned) for OCI containers, where the block size is 512 bytes. In this case, the 512-byte block size may not be adequate for a directory to contain enough dirents. To fix this, we are also going to introduce directory block size independent on the block size. Due to we have already supported block size smaller than PAGE_SIZE now, disable all these images with such separated directory block size until we supported this feature later. As the first step of converting hardcoded blocksize to that specified in on-disk superblock, convert all call sites of hardcoded blocksize to sb->s_blocksize except for: 1) use sbi->blkszbits instead of sb->s_blocksize in erofs_superblock_csum_verify() since sb->s_blocksize has not been updated with the on-disk blocksize yet when the function is called. 2) use inode->i_blkbits instead of sb->s_blocksize in erofs_bread(), since the inode operated on may be an anonymous inode in fscache mode. Currently the anonymous inode is allocated from an anonymous mount maintained in erofs, while in the near future we may allocate anonymous inodes from a generic API directly and thus have no access to the anonymous inode's i_sb. Thus we keep the block size in i_blkbits for anonymous inodes in fscache mode. Be noted that this patch only gets rid of the hardcoded blocksize, in preparation for actually setting the on-disk block size in the following patch. The hard limit of constraining the block size to PAGE_SIZE still exists until the next patch. Convert to struct mnt_idmap. Last cycle we merged the necessary infrastructure in 256c8aed2b42 ("fs: introduce dedicated idmap type for mounts"). This is just the conversion to struct mnt_idmap. Currently we still pass around the plain namespace that was attached to a mount. This is in general pretty convenient but it makes it easy to conflate namespaces that are relevant on the filesystem with namespaces that are relevent on the mount level. Especially for non-vfs developers without detailed knowledge in this area this can be a potential source for bugs. Once the conversion to struct mnt_idmap is done all helpers down to the really low-level helpers will take a struct mnt_idmap argument instead of two namespace arguments. This way it becomes impossible to conflate the two eliminating the possibility of any bugs. All of the vfs and all filesystems only operate on struct mnt_idmap.
