2026-10-01ARM: vexpress: fix device_node refcount leak in vexpress_smp_dt_prepare_cpus()Weigang He1-2/+2
vexpress_smp_dt_prepare_cpus() obtains a reference to the SCU device node via of_find_matching_node() and passes it to of_iomap(), but never calls of_node_put() on it. of_iomap() does not take ownership of the node, so the reference is leaked. The function is the .smp_prepare_cpus hook invoked once from the __init SMP bring-up path, so this is a one-shot leak of a single refcount during boot, with no functional impact. Annotate scu with the __free(device_node) cleanup attribute so the reference is released when the function returns. Found while reviewing a CodeQL report for vexpress_flags_set() on the same SMP bring-up path. 2026-10-01ARM: vexpress: fix device_node refcount leak in vexpress_flags_set()Weigang He1-2/+2
vexpress_flags_set() obtains a reference to the "arm,vexpress-sysreg" device node via of_find_compatible_node() and passes it to of_iomap(), but never calls of_node_put() on it. of_iomap() only reads the node's reg property to create the mapping and does not take ownership, so the node reference is leaked. The function runs from the __init SMP prepare path and caches the mapping in a static, so this is a one-shot leak of a single refcount during boot, with no functional impact. The lookup was added to drivers/mfd/vexpress-sysreg.c by the commit below and later moved here by commit 9b06fc39084e ("ARM: vexpress: Move vexpress_flags_set() into arch code"). Annotate node with the __free(device_node) cleanup attribute so the reference is released when it goes out of scope. Found by static analysis tool CodeQL. 2026-07-03ARM: deprecate support for ARM1136r0Arnd Bergmann1-1/+4
This CPU revision remains a special case as it is now incompatible with CONFIG_SMP. Only the Nokia N8x0 is used in practice, and even that one is fairly rare these days, so let's plan to remove all of them after the 2026 LTS kernel release. 2026-07-03ARM: rework ARM11 CPU selection logicArnd Bergmann1-5/+5
Support for SMP on ARM1136r0 has been broken for a while, and nobody is working on fixing it. I had a plan to change ARMv6 support to no longer coexist in a common kernel with ARMv7 CPUs but instead ARMv5 and below. This would have addressed the problem, but after a recent mailing list discussion, we concluded that an easier approach is to just forbid ARM1136r0 CPU support on SMP-enabled kernels. This mainly affects users of the Nokia N800/N810 tablets using an OMAP2420 SoC, which is the only commercial product with an ARM1136r0 that is still supported by the kernel. The other machines that are still in the same hardware catogory are: - TI OMAP2420 H4 reference board - TI OMAP2430 SDP software development platform - Freescale/NXP i.MX31 Lite Development Kit - Buglabs i.MX31 Bug 1.x prototype - Arm Integrator/AP with CM1136JF-S core module To my knowledge, none of these have any actual users aside from reference boards being used to more easily test the platforms. There are also a few ARM1136r1 machines, which implement the ARMv6K SMP support (barriers, atomics and TLS): - Eukrea CPUIMX35 reference platform - Freescale/NXP i.MX35 Product Development Kit - ARM Integrator/CP/IM-LT3 with ARM1136J Core Tile - ARM Realview/EB with ARM1136J Core Tile Again, these are mainly reference implementations rather than actual products, but since they support ARMv6K, they should continue to work correctly in SMP-enabled kernels. For the ARM Core Tile, I have not found a datasheet but instead use the revision based on what the respective virtual models report. All the other ARMv6 platforms use an ARM1176 with ARMv6K, VMSAv7 and Trustzone support. To avoid the broken configuration, annotate the ARM1136 based machines with specific CPU_ARM1136R0 or CPU_ARM1136R2 symbols in Kconfig and make the r0 variants depend on !SMP. 2026-05-07ARM: integrator: Fix early initializationGuenter Roeck1-9/+4
Starting with commit bdb249fce9ad4 ("ARM: integrator: read counter using syscon/regmap"), intcp_init_early calls syscon_regmap_lookup_by_compatible which in turn calls of_syscon_register. This function allocates memory. Since the memory management code has not been initialized at that time, the call always fails. It either returns -ENOMEM or crashes as follows. Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 0000000c when read [0000000c] *pgd=00000000 Internal error: Oops: 5 [#1] ARM Modules linked in: CPU: 0 UID: 0 PID: 0 Comm: swapper Not tainted 6.15.0-rc5-00026-g5fcc9bf84ee5 #1 PREEMPT Hardware name: ARM Integrator/CP (Device Tree) PC is at __kmalloc_cache_noprof+0xec/0x39c LR is at __kmalloc_cache_noprof+0x34/0x39c ... The crash is not seen with all versions of gcc. Some versions such as gcc 9.x apparently do not dereference the pointer, presumably if tracing is disabled. The problem has been reproduced with gcc 10.x, 11.x, and 13.x. Either case, if the crash is not seen, the call to syscon_regmap_lookup_by_compatible returns -ENOMEM, and sched_clock_register is never called. Fix the problem by moving the early initialization code into the standard machine initialization code. 2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds2-4/+4
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate conversion. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2026-02-21treewide: Replace kmalloc with kmalloc_obj for non-scalar typesKees Cook2-4/+4
This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) (where TYPE may also be *VAR) The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning "TYPE *". Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <kees@kernel.org>
2026-02-01ARM: versatile: Remove IRQF_ONESHOTSebastian Andrzej Siewior1-2/+2
Passing IRQF_ONESHOT ensures that the interrupt source is masked until the secondary (threaded) handler is done. The at91 platform gains support for sam9x7 chips in the soc and power management code. This is the latest variant of one of the oldest still supported SoC families, using the ARM9 (ARMv5) core. As usual, the qualcomm snapdragon platform gets a ton of updates in many of their drivers to add more features and additional SoC support. Most of these are somewhat firmware related as the platform has a number of firmware based interfaces to the kernel. A notable addition here is the inclusion of trace events to two of these drivers. Herve Codina and Christophe Leroy are now sending updates for drivers/soc/fsl/ code through the SoC tree, this contains both PowerPC and Arm specific platforms and has previously been problematic to maintain. The first update here contains support for newer PowerPC variants and some cleanups. The turris mox firmware driver has a number of updates, mostly cleanups. The Arm SCMI firmware driver gets a major rework to modularize the existing code into separately loadable drivers for the various transports, the addition of custom NXP i.MX9 interfaces and a number of smaller updates. The Arm FF-A firmware driver gets a feature update to support the v1.2 version of the specification. The reset controller drivers have some smaller cleanups and a newly added driver for the Intel/Mobileye EyeQ5/EyeQ6 MIPS SoCs. 2023-12-22ARM: Delete ARM11MPCore (ARM11 ARMv6K SMP) supportLinus Walleij3-19/+5
This ARM11 SMP configuration was one of the first SMP configurations the ARM kernel supported, but it has the downside of odd DMA handling, odd cache tagging, and often (as of recent) completely broken cache handling on the ARM RealView PB11MPCore test chips. To boot the platform it was necessary to completely disable the cache. When it comes to the EB 11MPCore it is unclear if this ever worked. These reference designs are now the only ARMv6K SMP platforms. As only reference designs of purely academic interest remain, and since the special-cased DMA and PMU code is hard to maintain and doesn't really work, it is not really worth our time. Delete the ARM11MPCore support along with: - The special DMA quirk CONFIG_DMA_CACHE_RWFO that is only used on ARMv6K SMP, and we are the last ARMV6K system leaving the building and the cache handling is awkward, so good-bye. - The special PMU handling that was only used by ARM11MPCore. The following is left behind: - TIMER_OF_DECLARE(arm_twd_11mp, "arm,arm11mp-twd-timer", ...) in arch/arm/kernel/smp_twd.c, this is still in use by Marvell MMP3 arch/arm/boot/dts/marvell/mmp3.dtsi - IRQCHIP_DECLARE(arm11mp_gic, "arm,arm11mp-gic", ...) in drivers/irqchip/irq-gic.c, this is still in use by Marvell MMP3 arch/arm/boot/dts/marvell/mmp3.dtsi - A compatible for the arm11mpcore SCU, since this was mistakedly used for the Cortex-A9 version of RealView EB. These are unfortunate but will need to be kept around for compatibility. New Marvell-specific compatibles should however probably be added. There are two options for platform device PATA support: PATA_PLATFORM: Generic platform device PATA support PATA_OF_PLATFORM: OpenFirmware platform device PATA support If an architecture allows the generic platform device PATA support, it shall select HAVE_PATA_PLATFORM. Then, Generic platform device PATA support is available and can be selected. If an architecture has OpenFirmware support, which it indicates by selecting OF, OpenFirmware platform device PATA support is available and can be selected. If OpenFirmware platform device PATA support is selected, then the functionality (code files) from Generic platform device PATA support needs to be integrated in the kernel build for the OpenFirmware platform device PATA support to work. Select PATA_PLATFORM in PATA_OF_PLATFORM to make sure the needed files are added in the build. So, architectures with OpenFirmware support, do not need to additionally select HAVE_PATA_PLATFORM. It is only needed by architecture that want the non-OF pata-platform module. Reflect this way of intended use of config symbols in the ata Kconfig and adjust all architecture definitions. This follows the suggestion from Arnd Bergmann (see Link). 2022-09-09termios: get rid of non-UAPI asm/termios.hAl Viro1-0/+1
All non-UAPI asm/termios.h consist of include of UAPI counterpart and, possibly, include of linux/uaccess.h The latter can't be simply removed, even though nothing in linux/termios.h doesn't depend upon it anymore - there are several places that rely upon that indirect chain of includes to pull linux/uaccess.h. So the include needs to be lifted out of there - we lift into tty_driver.h, serdev.h and places that pull asm/termios.h, but none of * linux/uaccess.h (obvious) * net/sock.h (pulls uaccess.h) * linux/{tty,tty_driver,serdev}.h (tty.h pulls tty_driver.h) That leaves us just with the include of UAPI asm/termios.h, which is what <asm/termios.h> will resolve to if we simply remove non-UAPI header. 2022-08-18ARM: remove obsolete Makefile.boot infrastructureArnd Bergmann1-4/+0
There are a number of old Makefile.boot files that remain from the multiplatform conversion, and three that are still in use. These provide the "ZRELADDR", "PARAMS_PHYS" and "INITRD_PHYS" values that are platform specific. It turns out that we can generally just derive this from information that is available elsewhere: - ZRELADDR is normally detected at runtime with the CONFIG_AUTO_ZRELADDR flag, but also needed to be passed to for 'make uImage'. In a multiplatform kernel, one always has to pass this as the $(LOADADDR) variable, but in the StrongARM kernels we can derive it from the sum of $(CONFIG_PHYS_OFFSET) and $(TEXT_OFFSET) that are already known. - PARAMS_PHYS and INITRD_PHYS are only used for bootpImage, which in turn is only used for the pre-ATAGS 'param_struct' based boot interface on StrongARM based machines with old boot loaders. They can both be derived from CONFIG_PHYS_OFFSET and a machine specific offset for the initrd, so all of the logic for these can be part of arch/arm/boot/bootp/Makefile. The largest change here is a cleanup of the omap1 platform, which is the final ARM machine type to get converted to the common-clk subsystem. All the omap1 specific drivers are now made independent of the mach/*.h headers to allow the platform to be part of a generic ARMv4/v5 multiplatform kernel. The last bit that enables this support is still missing here while we wait for some last dependencies to make it into the mainline kernel through other subsystems. The s3c24xx, ixp4xx, iop32x, ep93xx and dove platforms were all almost at the point of allowing multiplatform kernels, this work gets completed here along with a few additional cleanup. At the same time, the s3c24xx and s3c64xx are now deprecated and expected to get removed in the future. The PXA and OMAP1 bits are in a separate branch because of dependencies. 2022-04-08ARM: rework endianess selectionArnd Bergmann1-2/+3
Choosing big-endian vs little-endian kernels in Kconfig has not worked correctly since the introduction of CONFIG_ARCH_MULTIPLATFORM a long time ago. The problems is that CONFIG_BIG_ENDIAN depends on ARCH_SUPPORTS_BIG_ENDIAN, which can set by any one platform in the config, but would actually have to be supported by all of them. This was mostly ok for ARMv6/ARMv7 builds, since these are BE8 and tend to just work aside from problems in nonportable device drivers. For ARMv4/v5 machines, CONFIG_BIG_ENDIAN and CONFIG_ARCH_MULTIPLATFORM were never set together, so this was disabled on all those machines except for IXP4xx. As IXP4xx can now become part of ARCH_MULTIPLATFORM, it seems better to formalize this logic: all ARMv4/v5 platforms get an explicit dependency on being either big-endian (ixp4xx) or little-endian (the rest). We may want to fix ixp4xx in the future to support both, but it does not work in LE mode at the moment. For the ARMv6/v7 platforms, there are two ways this could be handled a) allow both modes only for platforms selecting 'ARCH_SUPPORTS_BIG_ENDIAN' today, but only LE mode for the others, given that these were added intentionally at some point. b) allow both modes everwhere, given that it was already possible to build that way by e.g. selecting ARCH_VIRT, and that the list is not an accurate reflection of which platforms may or may not work. Out of these, I picked b) because it seemed slighly more logical to me. Signed-off-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de>

CONFIG_COMMON_CLK_VERSATILE doesn't really do anything other than hiding Arm Ltd reference platform clock drivers. With this make CONFIG_ICST visible. Move the 'select REGMAP_MMIO' to the drivers that require it (SP810 did not). 2017-11-02License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman1-0/+1
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two inde
